ראיון עם ניל מורס

What was the reason why you finished with Transatlantic years ago and what is the reason for a new beginning?

Well, when I quit Spock's Beard for spiritual reasons, I felt like I shouldn't do Transatlantic as well, although it was kind of an after thought, as TA has always been a kind of side project band, my main focus was on SB at that time, but when I quit the one it seemed right to quit the other. The bottom line is that I quit because I felt at the time that is what God wanted me to do. Then a while ago I wrote a piece called "The Whirlwind" that seemed to have TA's name all over it. It sounded like Transatlantic to me. So, after considering it and praying about it for a few months, I asked the guys if they wanted to get together to work on it and play together again. It just felt like the right thing to do at the right time.

Can you please describe what is so special when you, Mike, Pete and Roine play together? What is the ultimate Transatlantic attitude?

The writing and recording period is pretty crazy. It's a bit like a whirlwind actually. Always has been. We get together in a room somewhere (this time at my place in Nashville) and just begin throwing around ideas and playing and everyone has got a lot of good things to throw into the pot. The question is: can I keep up with how fast it all moves along? It's quite fast and furious and wonderful...and what a bunch of players! These guys are among my favorite musicians in the world so it's a real treat.

Did you miss Transatlantic in the years after the first chapter was closed? When did you start to think about a reunion?

Actually, I didn't think about it too much. I'm always in love with whatever I am doing at the time, so I don't think about other projects at those times. I just started thinking about it about a year and a half ago.

Everything started again with your song The Whirlwind, right? What happened then?

I sat with it for awhile. I think I finished the demo of my version of the whirlwind in June of 08...maybe July...I say "my version" because what the band actually recorded is quite different from my original demo...anyway, I finished it and just thought about it for a bit. Then I emailed Mike, Pete and Roine in November/December of 08 and we talked about it and seemed that everybody wanted to do it so, here we have it! One of my favorite moments was emailing Thomas Waber of InsideOut Records who has been bugging me about a new TA for a long time and putting in the subject line "New TA??!!!". That was fun!!!

Was it difficult to reunite with the original Transatlantic line up? Where Pete and Roine as excited as you and Mike?

Yeah, I think everybody was really into it. The only thing that was at all difficult was the scheduling. You know, between Mike and Pete's schedule particularly this year it was really hard to get those guys together. For a while it was looking like it wasn't going to happen. At least not until 2014 or something...you know, Mike tours like a wild man...but somehow things opened up and all was great! I think everyone was really excited to play together again.

You met in Nashville to work on the new album: Can you please describe the way you worked on new songs?

The first night we just set up and jammed. I was surprised the guys even wanted to as they had just flown some 14 hours or something. But, troopers that they are, they wanted to dive straight in. I didn't realize it but after I watched the "making of DVD" (that comes with the deluxe version) I saw that much of the whole album was layed out on the first night! Many of the themes were either jammed out or came from one of our demos. It's pretty amazing what happened. God was totally with us now as I look back on it. Anyway, so we basically started with Pete's them from one of his demos and just followed the music along and came out 77 minutes later!! Astounding! Sometimes we would do a bit that we all liked and come to the end of it and look at each other and say "uh, what should we do now?" and someone would always have an idea, probably 6 ideas would come out of our collective mouths and then we'd have to decide which one to go with. That's actually the hardest part. making those decisions. But, we always seemed to work it out and it's an amazing record. I like it more today than I did when we made it.

What is the common ground between The Whirlwind and the first two studio albums? What is the main difference?

Common ground, well, it's big and huge and has that TA sound. I don't know how to describe it exactly...but TA has a sound. There are a lot of parts that remind of some bits that were on the records...particularly the spacy bits and then slowly getting into another song...but I think this a real exciting fresh record as well. The whole "Rose Colored Glasses" part seems quite different to me...as well as the Zeppelinesque "Lay Down Your Life" part...I don't recall that we ever did anything like that before. I love it!

In which way did Transatlantic develop? Both as individual musicians and as a band?

I think this is the truly the epic of all epics! I won't say "to end all epics" as that remains to be seen...but this is beyond anything we've ever done. A 77 minute long continuous concept piece? I don't know that ANY band has done that. have they?
So, as a band we've gone further than anyone has dared to go and I think as players we've all gotten better too. I think we are all still learning more about music and growing as musicians. If not, it would be really boring. But, You can't help but get better when you playing all the time. We have definitely put in our 10,000 hours as musicians. That's for sure.

Please describe The Whirlwind in your own words! What do you like most and what is the most surprising aspect of the new record?

The Whirlwind is a dazzling bit of brilliance inspired by universal lyrical themes and brought to life through a journey of music that listens and plays and breathes and lives. It's like an epic novel from Tolstoy. It is the "War and Peace" of prog.

Last question: All fans are waiting for another tour: What is the plan and do you already have a special concept for a tour?

We have no tour plans at this time and I have learned with TA not to say anything before it's time. You never know which way the TA ship will turn so ...keep watching. We're like a UFO...we may just appear in the sky at some point.

אני אישית לא יכולתי לחכות וכבר שמעתי את האפיק ומשמיעה אחת אני כבר אצא בהצהרה - מדובר בהוצאה מדהימה, שלפי דעתי היא ההוצאה הכי טובה של הלהקה. בעשר הדקות הראשונות חייכתי בלי הפסקה, וכל ה-77 דקות האלה הייתי באורגזמה מוזיקלית.

אבל - עשו טובה ותחכו לגרסה האמיתית שתדלוף, כי החבוב שמדבר כל כמה דקות על זה שמדובר בעותק פרומו ממש מעצבן.

אז אחרי 77 דקות ו-12 רצועות - אלבום מעולה! לא היה בו אף רגע משעמם, הוא פשוט מרהיב וכיפי בצורה שלא תאמן.
וואו.

לגבי הבחור המעצבן - הוא לא היה כזה מעצבן. בתחילת האלבום אלו הם חברי הלהקה שאומרים שזוהי גרסת פרומו ואחר-כך זה מישהו אחר קבוע.
בקטנה ממש. ממליץ לשמוע ולקנות!!

אני גם מאזין לרצועה הראשונה באלבום Overture / Whirlwind ואני לא יכול להגיד שאלו לא Transatlantic ( אם כי זה מאוד דומה לחומר של ניל ) , זה נשמע באמת טוב . זה עושה לי הרגשה טובה לבוקר

אומנם המקור לשיר הוא אכן של ניל, אבל כשאני מאזין לאלבום ומשווה אותו לאלבומי סולו של ניל - אני לא שומע את הדימיון.

מה שכן - בהחלט שומעים כאן "טרנסאטלנטיק" בצורה מובהקת - TA של "פעם", ו-TA בעלת הסאונד החדש.
מי שיאזין לאלבום יגלה לכל אורכו חלקים שלא שמענו בעבר (מן הסתם), אבל אלו הם חלקים ממש מרתקים בעיני.

אני מאמין בלב שלם שהחברים התעלו על עצמם.
