his iPhone app JR Hexatone, Dream Theater's world tour, and more.
Spiritech: ... To my ears, the new album strikes a strong balance between the Progressive elements, the Metal elements and some of the catchiest hooks you've ever written. I think the last time you really nailed that balance was on Train Of Thought. Was that the aim with this record?
Mike Portnoy: To be completely honest, no bullshit, that's our aim with every record. I think that sometimes people get it easier than others, you know? You mentioned Train of Thought - I loved Train Of Thought and thought that we definitely nailed that album. But there are people that don't like that album and it was too heavy or whatever. Then there's people that love Octavarium and other people who say it wasn't heavy enough. It's impossible to please everybody. I mean, if you take a poll of a hundred Dream Theater fans, you're gonna get different answers from each one of them. So really, it's just our goal each and every time we make a record to have that balance of the three things you said - the progressive, the metal and the melodic. Every time we try to have all of those as strong as possible.

NU.nl spoke with singer James LaBrie on the newest addition to the oeuvre, Black Clouds and Silver Linings.
Dream Theater is on record as it still comes from the old school, says LaBrie.
"Today, many bands in the studio with a mountain of demos and a blueprint of how the album should be heard.
We do it more like the 70s bands like Pink Floyd, Genesis and Rush made their plates.
We do everything in the studio, from writing to producing. Everything happens within the same four walls and is part of that process. "
Message
From that process came this time Black Clouds and Silver Linings. A plate with no clear concept,
LaBrie said, but with a clear message.
"Whether nou anything good or bad happens in your life: you learn it. You grow them as a person.
Since I believe very strongly. Your life is enriched and it's a negative or a positive experience.
This is the "silver lining" to any storm cloud hanging over your head. "
Accessible
The members of Dream Theater are known for their excellent technical skills and that makes the
music of the band is not always accessible. But that is something the singer appears to be very proud.
"Every Dream Theater album is eclectic, and in no case the predecessor appears.
We need our fans continue to surprise with each new album. Diversity is what it really
stimulating and exciting for us is. There is nothing predictable, there are no boundaries or
limitations that we think we should keep going. Dream Theater plates should be no background,
you should certainly not after twice running through it. "
U2
Yet the singer has great admiration for bands that are 'easy' music.
"U2 is one great example. This is a great band. It is much harder to deliver accessible,
catchy music to write than many people think. That really is very underestimated.
I can not hear, such simple and effective writing songs. I wish I could, then my
bank account was as thick as that of Bono. "
Roadrunner
Black Clouds & Silver Linings is the second album by Dream Theater on the Roadrunner label.
LaBrie believes that the band transition from the 'big' company to the much smaller Atlantic Roadrunner make overdue.
"We feel extremely at home with Roadrunner. Above all we feel very appreciated.
We are working with people who appreciate our music as much as we do ourselves.
If we start with a label that had sat on our value was estimated, we had a much larger band could be. "
The band then may now feel more at home on their label, Roadrunner, it could also not
prevent the Black Clouds & Silver Linings few weeks before the official release on the Internet already existed.
Respect
"Illegal downloading is the ultimate form of disrespect. It is simply steal.
I find it outrageous that people illegally downloading music dare to excuse so they can spend
money on something else, "said a clearly irritated LaBrie.
"If an album of Dream Theater download illegally deprives my income and show no respect
for my work. Those stealing from me and paralyzing the music industry. "
But how frustrated he is about illegal downloading, a solution to the problem he has not.
Sick
"There are other people but to car, for such things taught by.
I am a musician, not a businessman or lawyer.
Do not wrong with: the Internet itself is fantastic that we have a much closer relationship
with our listeners and certainly brought many new fans brought. But that whole illegal downloading,
I'm already sick when I think of it. "
Dream Theater plays on October 7 in Ahoy in Rotterdam.
